VMware reloaded
Got the latest VMware Workstation (6.5.2). The release notes file didn’t say anything about kernel support. I was hoping for 2.6.29 support. The previous WS version (6.5.1) didn’t compile and an unofficial patch was required to make it work.
Did anything change with this release?
No.
What do you mean?
A patch is still required to make it compile on 2.6.29. Another one. Here‘s the first one.
OK, but it DOES work after applying the patch, right?
Yes:
Are there any interesting features?
Yes. If necessary, all necessary kernel modules are built automatically when vmware is launched or when the vmware service is started. Starting WS 6.5.1, vmware-config.pl has been dropped off. The GTK interface is more like a bonus, it’s not really needed, but it’s a nice feature.
Anything else?
Yes, it’s called Easy Install:
- it includes support for several newer operating systems (both Windows and Linux). If you’re trying to install a supported system, it’ll automatically do it for you (everything from partitioning to package selection)
- you’ll get prompted for a username and a password which will be used to create a regular user (the same password is used for the root/Administrator account)
- VMware Tools is installed automatically when the Guest OS boots for the first time
Does it work for all guest systems?
I only tried Ubuntu 9.04.
It doesn’t work for Fedora 11 Beta. Hopefully it will once the final release is out.
